Sanda-Jones
This Japanese house was another collaboration with Joinery Structures. We were the general contractor and Joinery the designer and timber framer. They also built all of the doors and windows on site. Roofers were brought from Japan to install this traditional tile roof and plasterers to apply both the interior and exterior plaster. The interior plaster is made of clay from the job site and rice straw. A local Japanese woodworker made the Ofuru (Japanese soaking tub). The posts, ceiling boards and decking are Port Orford cedar and the structural beams Douglas fir. The garage doors are sectional doors but made with all of the same elements as the building (redwood paneling, plaster and glass). When the Japanese roofing contractor arrived he commented that it is rare to find this level of craftsmanship in Japan today.
